Wanda L. Kieke, 78, passed away on August 4, 2017 due to liver cancer. She died peacefully, surrounded by her two sons, their wives and her three grandchildren. Wanda joined her beloved husband, Howard, who went home to Heaven in 1997.
Wanda was born in Akron in 1939, and spent the majority of her years in Green, Ohio. She graduated as the class Salutatorian of Green High School in 1957. As a newlywed, she lived in Virginia Beach while her husband served in the U.S. Navy. Wanda was a lifelong member of The Greensburg Church of God. She served as a Sunday school superintendent, Bible school coordinator, church deposit teller, Youth co-director, Missions committee chairman, Board of Trustees member, and a choir member and soloist among other activities. Her favorite Bible verse is from Matthew that says “…with God all things are possible”.
Wanda volunteered at the Akron General Medical Center, where she served over 10 years. She made many friends at the hospital, and enjoyed her time there immensely. She was always quick to lend a supportive ear to staff and patients. Wanda also served as the Green coordinator for “Relay for Life”, raising thousands of dollars to help fight cancer.
Wanda will be remembered for her persistence, wit, common sense, and devotion to her kids and grandchildren. Her kids know that she made events special, like always finding a personal Christmas gift that was both a surprise and relevant. Her grandchildren appreciated the extra effort she made to attend their sporting events, activities and school honors.
Wanda is survived by three brothers, seven in-laws and their families. She will be missed dearly by her children, Steven (Michele) of Tallmadge and Scott (Jennifer) of Akron; and grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew and Sarah of Tallmadge.
The family appreciates the attention that Wanda received from concerned friends and clergy over the last six months of uncertainty. They would like to especially thank Jan and Tom Dwenger for their exceptional consideration.
A funeral service with immediate family was held on Monday, August 7 at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Akron. Wanda had a Christian burial at Hillside Memorial Park on Canton Road in Akron. The services were officiated by Reverend David Cross and his wife, Twila.
Wanda’s family is planning a Memorial Celebration of her life at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at The Greensburg Church of God, 4691 Massillon Road, North Canton, OH 44720. Memorial contributions are welcome and should be made to the church.
