Walter Fredrick Henkel Jr., age 87, completed his life-long earthly adventure and entered into the arms of our Heavenly Father on June 23, 2015.
Walter was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on July 7, 1927 to the late Walter Sr. and Ida Henkel, the oldest of six children. His family was his life. On September 9, 1948 he married the love of his life, Maxine in Akron, Ohio. Married 66 years, they were always working together side by side holding hands. Into this marriage, two daughters and two sons were born. Walter started working at age 16 for 63 cents at Goodyear Aircraft. He eventually retired from Goodyear Aerospace after 38 years of service after serving in the U.S. Army/ Air Forces.
Walter enjoyed being a part of Goodyear Boy Scout Troop 42 as an assistant scout leader for ten years, and he also worked with the Ellet Bantam Football League for two years. With his wife, Maxine he enjoyed lots of mystery trips, travel, mission boxes, wrap-n-roll, family picnics at Wingfoot Park, card games, playing spoons and family dinners. Dad was notorious for making a mean meatloaf, and his legendary meatloaf recipe still remains a secret. Walt collected postcards and buttons. He loved doing magic tricks and had a passion for telling jokes. He rarely missed his favorite TV show, Wheel of Fortune, and was a fan of the Cleveland Indians, Browns and the Cavs. As an example of his love and steadfast faith in God, he could often be found with his Bible open, reading and praying for each family member and those on the church prayer list. Walt was a hard worker, and had values of honesty and sacrifice with generosity toward others.
He will be deeply missed by daughters, Martha (Darrell) and Susan (Wayne); son, Paul Sr. (Kathy); grandchildren, Valeri (Chad), Paul Jr., Renée, Michael and Brian; great-grandchildren, Jason, Tyler, Dylan, Destinee, BreeAnn, Adia, Gavin, Tristyn, Shania, Kyle, Kalvin and Shawna; sister, Catherine; and many nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sr. and Ida; his loving wife, Maxine; his brothers, John, Chester, Robert Gordon and Kenneth; his son, Michael; and his great-grandson, Austin. Our heartfelt thanks to the loving staff at Mulberry Gardens and Crossroads Hospice for taking such loving care of our dad and family.
Family and friends will be received Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron, Ohio 44312. Funeral service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. at Faith Bible Fellowship, 126 W. Overdale Drive, Tallmadge, Ohio 44278 with Pastor Les Sutherland officiating.
