Thomas H. “Tom” Bowers, 80, passed away June 3, 2013.
He was born in Lumberport, WV, to Henry and Rose Bowers, the only son of the supervisor of the Grant Town Coal Mines. Tom later moved to the Akron area where he has resided since 1959. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a clerk typist. Tom was a teacher at Springfield High School for 37 years; was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Lakemore United Methodist Church.
Preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce; son, Neil Thomas (Sandra); grandsons, Benjamin Christian and Christopher Barclay; many other family members and very special friends. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and caregivers at Summa Health System for their care of Tom. Visiting will be held Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Rd., Akron, Ohio 44312.
Funeral service Friday, 11:30 a.m., at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Gindlesberger officiating. Burial will follow at Markillie Cemetery in Hudson where Mogadore VFW Post #8487 will conduct military rites. A meal will be served at the Wedgewood United Methodist Church, 2350 Wedgewood Drive, Akron, Ohio 44312 beginning at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lakemore United Methodist Church, 1536 Flickinger Rd., Akron, Ohio 44312.
