Thomas Phillip Murphy

October 29, 1939 — September 12, 2016

Thomas Phillip Murphy, age 76, passed away on September 12, 2016 following an extended illness. He was attended by family and many dear friends.

Tom was born October 29, 1939 in Mogadore, Ohio to John and Edna (Ghere) Murphy as the eighth of eleven children. He graduated from Mogadore High School in 1957 where he excelled not only at athletics but also education. He chose to pursue an education degree and continue his athletic career at the University of Akron where as a senior he was captain of both the football and track teams. When he began his teaching career, he continued his education at The Ohio State University and Kent State University. Tom taught at Cuyahoga Falls and Field before he returned to Mogadore High School where he helped shape the lives of many students and athletes as a coach, assistant principal and principal before retiring in 1991. He returned a year later as principal and then spent several years developing teaching seminars.

During his years as a wrestling coach, he was instrumental in creating Sunday Night Wrestling. He opened the Mogadore Field House for area wrestlers to come and work out together. His efforts as a coach and educator have had a lasting impact on many young adults. His passion for personal growth and education was a constant throughout his life. He always encouraged critical thinking and excellence. Tom strived to get each individual to be the best that they could be whether it was on the athletic field, the mat, the track, the classroom, or in life. His motto was “Excellence: Expect It”. While he enjoyed athletics and focused on education, his true passion was his family. He was blessed to be part of a large, loving and supportive family. He married his high school sweetheart on December 27, 1958 and they had three children. He truly adored his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them grow and excel. He was first and foremost a family man.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kenneth and John Murphy; his sisters, Barbara Murphy and Delores Davis. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Stevens); his children, Barbara (Terry) Callihan, Susan (Steven) Moberger and Daniel (Sherry) Murphy; his grandchildren, Joseph and Thomas Callihan, Alexis, Emma and Adam Moberger; his brothers, Jim (Barb), Paul (Karen), Mike (Lynn) and Larry (Karen) Murphy; his sisters, Patsy (Bob) Tompkins and Edna (Ralph) Pierce; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. The family wishes to thank all of those loyal friends and family who helped comfort and support Tom through his illness. A thank you to the staff at Akron General Visiting Nurse Service Hospice Center for their care.

At Tom’s request, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held. A family memorial service will take place at a later date.
