Thomas A. LoIudice, age 71, passed away suddenly July 20, 2014.
He was born December 3, 1942 in Wilmington, Delaware, the fourth child of Dominick and Carmela LoIudice. Dr. Tom graduated from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, went to medical school in Chicago and Antigua, and studied gastroenterology in Albany, N.Y. Professional interests included research studies in Crohn’s and other G.I. diseases, publishing more than 50 papers. He came to Akron, Ohio in 1977 and practiced gastroenterology for 37 years as President of Akron Gastroenterology Associates, Inc.
He was past president of Summit County Medical Society, was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, member of OSMA where he served as delegate, AMA, ACG, and AGA. He was also a Professor of Medicine at NEOMED, where he served as head of the Nutrition Department. Besides enjoying and spending time with his grandchildren, Tom coached his two sons in baseball through high school. He loved sports, especially his Steelers and Phillies, and attended many sporting events including three Super Bowls.
Preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Catherine Lewis; he is survived by sons, Christopher (Amanda) of Pittsburgh and Mark of Mogadore; his grandchildren, James and Claire; sisters, Marie Lewis and Anne Vari of Delaware; friend and former wife, Dr. Jean Lang LoIudice; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44312. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, 11 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 1800 Steese Road, Uniontown, Ohio 44685 with Father David R. Durkee presiding. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Randolph. The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
