Robert Eugene "Gene" Burkett

Robert E. Burkett, 90, of Mogadore went to be with the Lord on December 31, 2016 after a sudden illness surrounded by his loving family. Born December 8, 1926 in Akron, Ohio, he is the son of John Arthur Burkett and Almeda Amanda (Smith) Burkett. On August 1, 1948 he married Margaret I. Hyde of Mann’s Choice, Pa., who preceded him in death on April 24, 2016. He was also preceded in death by parents; daughter-in-law, Donna (Cutting) Burkett; and granddaughter, Carrie Dulin. Gene was a loving husband of over 67 years and caring father to three children. He is survived by daughters, Patsy Dulin and husband Carl of Doylestown, Ohio, Cathy Warchal and husband Rick of Powell, Ohio; and a son, John Burkett of Akron; five grandchildren, Ben (Kristie) Dulin of Marshalville, Ohio, Dawn (Gary) Bishop of Uniontown, Ohio, Jessica (Andrew) Jackson of Tallmadge, Ohio, Angela (Matt) Walder of Bellefonte, Pa., and Amy Warchal of Powell; and eleven great-grandchildren, Audrey, Amelia, Makenzie, Olivia, Eli, Alaina, Grady, Cameron, Isaac, Noah, Ethan. Robert attended Hower Vocational School in Akron. He was a proud World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during 1945-1946 with a refueling unit around Japan. Robert worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron as a sheet metal worker and retired with 40 years of service in 1990. He enjoyed being a back-yard mechanic, old cars and motorcycles, gardening, reading the Akron Beacon Journal and magazines and spending time with family. Mr. Burkett was a lifetime member of the Suffield United Church of Christ. Friends will be received at the Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home – Ellet, 547 Canton Road, Akron, Ohio on Thursday, January 5, 2017 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with funeral services immediately following.
