Robert L. “Bob” Collins, age 85, transitioned into eternity on March 9, 2017.
Born in Barnwell, S.C., he lived most of his life in the Akron area, graduated from Akron Central High School in 1950 and then went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from The University of Akron and a master’s degree from Kent State University. Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was employed with Springfield Local School District, retiring from Lakemore Elementary School in 1986. Bob also taught at The University of Akron for 12 years, and served on the Springfield Board of Education. He was an avid golfer, active in Kiwanis and his church, North Canton Church of Christ. He also volunteered as an educational aid at Green Primary School.
Preceded in death by his mother, Mary; stepfather, Tiger Smith; sisters, Dot and Jo; and nephew, Andy, he is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ann; sons, Jeffrey and Michael (Glenda); grandchildren, Justin, Nolan (Kristi), Kyle, Cody and Kanyon; great-granddaughter, Addie; brother, Bill; and sister, Jimmie.
Friends and family will be received Monday, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave.) Memorial service will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m. at North Canton Church of Christ, 1301 E. Maple Street, North Canton, OH 44720 with Ted Blackwood officiating. Private interment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville. The family suggests memorials to North Canton Church of Christ Outreach Ministry.
