Richard Kenneth Young, 90, passed away at his residence December 23, 2016 after a short illness.
He was born in Akron, where he was a lifelong resident, on February 2, 1926, the son of Howard Young Sr. and Mildred Homan Young.
Dick was part of the Greatest Generation and served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army. Retiring from Goodyear Aerospace after 40 years, Dick became a leading member of the Good Neighbors Goodyear Heights Food Center volunteering for over 32 years. He was a member of the Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church since 1951, serving as Treasurer and on various committees. He was well known as the “master potato masher” at church dinners.
Dick had a special knack for decorating and enjoyed painting and updating his home. He liked casino trips, traveling, gardening, reading, and spending time with his family. Dick was one of the kindest, gentlest and most giving individuals you could ever meet.
Dick is survived by his sister-in-law, Merle Young; nieces, Janet (Jim) Kershaw, Jeanine (Wayne) Richenbacher, Marlene Heineman, Christine Young; nephews, Steve (Michele) Young, Dan (Bridget) Young, Mike (Stephanie) Young; and many great nieces/nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Maude; brothers, Bob (Irene), Fred and Jim Young; and also nephew, Don.
Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church, 1430 Goodyear Blvd., Akron, Ohio 44305 with Rev. Reford Nash officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park, 3653 W. Market St. Akron, Ohio 44333. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44312. Memorials may be made to the Good Neighbors Goodyear Heights Food Center, 1453 Goodyear Blvd., Akron, OH 44305.
