Philip C. Leonard of Green, Ohio passed away Nov. 12, 2014 at the age of 87 years.
Born in Fort Wayne, Ind. the family soon moved to the Ravenna area where he graduated from Ravenna High School with letters in multiple sports all four years. He left school early to join the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. After the war he returned to the area where he met and married the love of his life, Phyllis (nee Stockdale), who passed away in 2006. Mr. Leonard lived as a 32nd degree Master Mason (Coventry Lodge and Valley of Akron).
Before he retired he was employed as the United Steel Workers’ (formerly the United Rubber Workers) Political Education Director. Prior to that, he held many union positions within URW Local #7 including Skilled Trades Division Chairman and Treasurer. He also was Secretary-Treasurer of the Akron Labor Council for a number of years. One of Mr. Leonard’s proudest accomplishments was that he had spent 44 years as a member of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office both as an Appraiser and as a Deputy Sheriff.
Left to grieve his memory are brothers, Frank and Guillermo of San Francisco, Calif.; sons, Philip Michael (Allyson) of Hartville, David (Barb) of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Kerry (Tammy) of Ravenna and Christopher of Coventry Twp. Also grandchildren, Tracey Sipe, Philip Scott Leonard, Michael Leonard; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Raychel Sipe; and a multitude of friends, especially golf partner, Matt Contessa. Cremation has taken place.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 at Queen of Heaven Church, 1800 Steese Road, Green. Friends may call one half an hour prior. A celebration of life will immediately follow. At the request of the family, in place of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
