MOGADORE – Patsy Ruth Tompkins, age 89, went to be with Jesus on Monday, October 7, 2019.
Patsy was born in Mogadore on August 9, 1930 to John Murphy and Edna (Ghere) Murphy. She had ten brothers and sisters, John, Kenneth, Dolores (Davis), Barbara, Jim, Paul, Tom, Mike, Edna (Pierce) and Larry. Patsy was a life resident of Mogadore and graduated from Mogadore High School.
Patsy was a member of Mogadore Christian Church for 81 years and she was baptized 75 years ago. When she was young, she worked in the swamp in Hartville and delivered the Beacon Journal and Record Courier. Patsy also cleaned and cooked for Mrs. Bowers and several other families. Later, Mom worked at Robinson Clay for 12 years (where she met Bob), and then worked for Sumco for eight years. Most of all, Patsy was a homemaker and babysitter. The number of children she babysat is legendary!
Patsy was a member of the Mogadore Booster Club for 64 years, the Mogadore Alumni Association for 12 years, and the Mogadore Historical Society for 15 years. She played and coached basketball and enjoyed all sporting events, especially football and wrestling.
Patsy loved babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and doing anything with her husband and family. She enjoyed spending time at Lake Milton and trips to Myrtle Beach, especially making sand castles. Patsy loved writing hundreds of cards to her family and many friends. These cards would be for all occasions and usually contained a dollar and a stick of gum.
Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edna Murphy; siblings, Kenny, Barb, Dolores, John, Tom and Mike; granddaughter, Michele Soles; and sister-in-law, Lynn Murphy. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Robert “Bob” Tompkins Sr.; sons, Robert Jr. (Sandi), John and George (Patricia); daughter, Karen Fuhrman (Tom); 22 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Larry, Jim (Barb) and Paul (Karen) Murphy; and sister, Edna (Rufus) Pierce.
Patsy dearly loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and dear friends, however she was a “Mom” to anyone in Mogadore. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew her.
Family and friends will be received Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver MOGADORE Funeral Home, 34 S. Cleveland Avenue (Route 532), Mogadore, Ohio 44260, where a Memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. Sunday with Dr. Eugene Higgins officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Mogadore Historical Society in Patsy’s honor.
