Oscar A. Whittington Jr., age 88, went home to be with the Lord on March 28, 2018 while surrounded by his family.
Born in Buffalo, West Va., he lived in the Portage County area most of his life and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Whittington was employed with Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 219, and also served as a Hiram Police Officer for over 20 years. He was a member of Truth Baptist Church.
Oscar had a passion for gardening and farming, and loved watching and caring for birds. He enjoyed spending time with his family and volunteering at his church. Oscar had a heart for children and was a true supporter of church and school programming allowing kids to grow in their faith.
Preceded in death by his wife, Emogene; sisters, Ina, Christine “Cricket” and Evelyn; and brother, Austin “Auty”, Oscar is survived by his children, Chuck (Pam) of Rootstown and Connie (Roger) Dishong of Marlboro; grandchildren, Tiffany (Brian) Wise, Roger (Sarah Lawver-Dishong) Dishong, Kelly and Luke Whittington; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Anderson, Avery and Evelyn Dishong; brother, Ralph Wayne (Linda) Whittington; sister, Ruth; and many nieces, nephews and loving family.
Oscar’s family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at UH Portage Medical Center for their care and concern over the past week.
Family and friends will be received Monday, from 4 to 7 p.m., and Tuesday, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron (Ellet), Ohio 44312. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Roy Teague officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna where Mogadore VFW Post 8487 will conduct military honors.
