Neil LeRoy Volk, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away at his home in Hartville, Monday, October 14, 2013.
He was born on September 30, 1937, to William and Virginia Volk in Conneaut, Ohio, the fourth of seven children. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1955. Neil met his future bride, Joyce Chenoweth, while at Kent State University. He completed his undergraduate degree in education at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa where he played football, basketball and baseball. Neil and Joyce were married in Akron, Ohio on August 6, 1960. They attended The Chapel in Akron/Green and have served as members for 45 years.
Neil began teaching and coaching at Norton High School in the early 1960s. He earned his Master’s in Education from Kent State and became the vocational director for Alliance City Schools until his retirement in 1993. Neil was a skilled craftsman and built several houses, including his residence in Hartville. He could fix/make anything. Retirement allowed Neil to work at the Hartville Hardware with his friends in tool repair. Thursdays found Neil and his buddies from church enjoying breakfast, golf and lunch at Mayfair. He derived much pleasure watching his grandchildren play sports. Neil passed on his love of games to his children and grandchildren, including the pursuit of a “29” hand in cribbage.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joyce Volk; along with his brothers and sisters, Ralph Volk (Jan), Frank Volk (Joyce), Willa Dean (Tom), Susan Chaney (Jim), Ruth Carlisle (Chuck) and Joni Graeff (Les); his two children, Kellie Ochs (Steve) and Jay Volk (Anne); and his four grandchildren, Thaddeus Ochs, Sullivan Ochs, Camille Volk and Russell Volk.
Memorial Services will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22nd at The Chapel in Green, 1800 Raber Rd., Green, OH 44685. Pastor Daniel Burmeister will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until service time. Memorials may be made to Haven of Rest Ministries, 175 E.
