Millie A. “YaYa” Cathey-Thomas, age 70, went home to be with the Lord on July 2, 2014.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, she graduated from Kenmore High School and received her associate degree from the University of Akron. Millie retired from the University of Akron, and worked for the Akron Public Schools Transportation Department. She was a member of Shoreline Community Church, belonged to The Victorians at The Hower House, and was a volunteer at The Chapel in University Park’s International Student Program.
Preceded in death by her first husband, Jerry Allan Cathey in 1983; and second husband, Wilborn “Tom” Thomas in 2013; she is survived by her son, Jeffrey (Candice) Cathey. Millie was a very loving grandmother to Rebecca and Joshua Cathey, known to them as “YaYa”. Her grandchildren were dear to her heart. She is also survived by sister, Diana Goodpasture; nieces, nephews, a great-niece and great-nephew; stepchildren, Cindy (Bill) Summerfield, Karen (Kurt) Richards, John (Susan) Thomas, and their children and grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44312, where a Praise Celebration Service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. with Pastor Scott Campbell officiating. Burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Akron. The family suggests memorials to the Faith Girlz Program at Shoreline Community Church, 790 Carnegie Avenue, Akron, OH 44314.
