Mary Jane Sokol

Mary Jane Sokol, 85, passed away on September 15, 2017. She was born on January 17, 1932 in Akron, Ohio. She was a lifetime resident of Akron and graduated from North High School. Mary Jane graduated with a degree in education from the University of Akron, where she was an Alpha Delta Pi. She taught 23 years in the Akron Public Schools where she retired from Forest Hill after 10 years. Mary Jane was a devout member of St. Matthew Catholic Church where she taught CCD and sang in the funeral choir. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in sporting activities. Mary Jane enjoyed Sudoku, euchre and rummy. She was a diehard Cleveland Indians and Cavs fan. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joe; daughter, Lisa Ann; grandson, Brian; parents, Michael and Mary Grace Russo; sisters, Ralphael Kuzmik, Helen DiNuoscio and Irene Palumbo; brother, Joseph Russo; and son-in-law, Joseph Veverka. She leaves sons, David (Beverly), Joseph M. (Kris) and Mark (Kim); daughters, Joyce Mosser, Susan Veverka and Linda (Bob) Harris; grandchildren, Tiffany, Jonathan and Allissa Sokol, Janice (Ryan) Johnston and Jake Mosser, Kyle “Pepper” (Weston) and Lucas Sokol, Andy (Hillary) and Will Veverka, Nikki (Dan) Falbo, JoJo, Krissy and Mikey Sokol, Lisa, Kit and Jeremy Harris; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the ALS Association Northern Ohio Chapter. The family will receive friends Monday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron, Ohio 44312. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, 11 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2580 Berne Street, Akron, Ohio 44312, with Father Michael Williamson presiding. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lisa Ann Sokol Scholarship Fund at St. Matthew School.
