Marie Kanis, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on October 4, 2017.
Born on October 31, 1929 in Barberton, Marie graduated from Ravenna High School in 1948. She lived most of her life in Springfield Township.
Marie served on the Springfield Township Zoning Board and Board of Appeals. She enjoyed babysitting for numerous neighborhood and Roosevelt Elementary children. She was a member of St. Matthew Parish.
Marie enjoyed chocolate, camping, polka music, watching Wheel of Fortune, and completing word search puzzles. With a Halloween birthday, she found humor in calling herself the “old witch.”
Preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Edward J. and son, Edward S., she is survived by her daughters, Jackie (Don) Boyd, Karen Kanis, Pam (Paul) Richards, Cheryl (Steve) Slusarczyk; and son, Tony Kanis; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends and family will be received Sunday, October 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron, Ohio 44312. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, October 9, 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2580 Berne Street, Akron, Ohio 44312 with Father Michael Williamson presiding. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
