Heaven welcomed another angel on March 8, 2017 when Katherine “Kay” (Lojas, Stupak) Snodgrass passed away at the age of 91.
Kay was born on May 15, 1925 to John (a farmer and a miner) and Antonina (a homemaker) Lojas in Martins Ferry, Ohio, and was one of 12 children.
Kay spent the first eight years of her education at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Martins Ferry and then went on to Martins Ferry High School. She worked “way back when” at Marsh Wheeling Stogies in Wheeling, West Virginia, and for a while would walk across the Ohio River on the suspension bridge – in high heels – back and forth to Bridgeport, Ohio. She later worked at Patterson Air Field in Osborn (now Wright-Patterson AFB) during World War II and also in McMechen, West Virginia inspecting shells used for war bombs. In the 1960’s she later worked at Woolworth’s in Martins Ferry.
Kay moved to Akron, Ohio in 1964 when she married her second husband. After moving to Akron, she worked at Interstate United Vending Company where she worked in the money room lifting 50 lb. bags of money. After retirement she worked at Fashion Bug.
Kay was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Martins Ferry from 1925 until 1964, at which time she became a long-time member of St. Matthews Parish in Ellet.
She was preceded in death by parents, John and Antonina Lojas of St. Clairsville, Ohio; and husbands, Victor Stupak and Bud Snodgrass; also sisters, Alice (John) Zurek of Martins Ferry, Helen (Henry) Duda and Anne Lojas, both of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Mary Lojas (infant). Kay was also preceded in death by brothers, Albert (Josephine) Lojas of Irwin, Pa., Victor (Nancy) Lojas and Walter (Blanche) Lojas, both of Martins Ferry, John (Helen) Lojas of Chicago and Frankie Lojas (infant).
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bruce Thomas of Hartville; grandchildren, Jason Rovira and Brandy Taylor; two great-grandsons; sisters, Lizzie Sall and Nellie Polivka, both of St. Clairsville; nieces, nephews, “other daughter”, Cindy Groff (John) and their daughter, Beth Brennan of Florida; and more friends than we can count.
Kay was a whiz at bowling and spent many years on the Hopkins Bowling Team. She was blessed with amazingly good health until her fall just before she turned 88. She loved to walk, and until the age of 87 would walk down to Acme in Ellet with her friend, Anne.
Kay was exceptionally blessed with such loving care throughout her later years, and we would especially like to thank Carolyn with Haven Home Care, who was so gentle and kind and loving.
Extra special thanks to Jason, Jade, Yvonne, Deb, Amanda, Kathy, BJ, Connie, Cameron, Alexis, Shannon, Steve, Sara, Megan, dear, sweet Nick and Cass, and everyone at Green Village, who gave such warm and loving care to mom for the last seven months of her life. Sincere thanks also to Dr. Mark Smith, Dr. Volfre, Fr. Durkee of Queen of Heaven, and the incredible support of All Caring Hospice.
Private services will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Kay’s name to Sancta Clara Monastery, 4200 Market Avenue N., Canton, Ohio 44714.
