Joseph E. White, age 91, passed away on July 1, 2016 after a brief illness.
Born in Weston, W. Va. to James and Mabel White, he moved to Akron in 1946 after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Joseph retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after 40 years of service, and had also been employed as a Springfield Township school bus driver for 20 years. He was a member of Clearview United Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Wayfarer Lodge No. 789 F&AM, the Goodyear Hunting and Fishing Club and the GRA Club. Being an avid outdoorsman, Joseph loved hunting, fishing, camping and gardening, and also enjoyed bowling. A favorite passion was spending time working on his farm in West Virginia, but Joseph had recently told a minister that the most important thing in his life was his faith and family.
Preceded in death in 2015 by his wife of 70 years, Bernadine; and three siblings, he is survived by his son, Larry (Mary); daughter, Sharon (Lloyd) Filler; grandchildren, Andrew (Julie) White, Brian (Jen) White, and Melissa (Doug) Eisenbrandt; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, William and John; sisters, Jean Stalnaker, Martha Kerns and Ann Clark. He will be missed by many other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron (Ellet), Ohio 44312 with Pastor Linda Bradley officiating. Burial with military rites by Firestone VFW Post 3383 will follow at Hillside Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. A Masonic service will be held at 11 a.m. at the beginning of the funeral service. The family suggests memorials to the Free Meal Program at Clearview United Methodist Church, 1733 Massillon Road, Akron, OH 44312.
