Joseph P. Sokol, 84, passed away on December 28, 2014.
He was born on April 30, 1930 in Akron, Ohio. Joe was a devout member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and also a member of Charles Reymann Knights of Columbus #4664. He participated in the Korean Conflict and was an East High Oriental. Joe retired after 44 years of service from Goodyear Tire where he last worked at the Stow Mold Plant. He was a 24-gallon donor in the Red Cross program at Goodyear Tire. Joe enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sporting activities. He was an avid golfer, amateur euchre player, and enjoyed going on short bus trips with the “old” people.
Joe was preceded in death by daughter, Lisa Ann; grandson, Brian; parents, Vancl and Katherine Sokol; sisters, Catherine Bojo and Helen Franjesevic; and son-in-law, Joseph Veverka. He leaves his loving wife, Mary Jane of 60 years; sons, David (Beverly), Joseph M. (Kris) and Mark (Kim); daughters, Joyce Mosser, Susan Veverka and Linda (Bob) Harris; grandchildren, Tiffany, Jonathan and Allissa Sokol, Janice and Jake Mosser, Kyle “Pepper” and Lucas Sokol, Andy and Will Veverka, Nikki (Dan) Falbo, JoJo, Krissy and Mikey Sokol, Lisa, Kit and Jeremy Harris.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2580 Berne Street, Akron, Ohio 44312, with Father Michael Williamson presiding. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44312; and Saturday, from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lisa Ann Sokol Scholarship Fund at St. Matthew School.
