Joseph E. Meckler

Joseph E. Meckler Sr., 81 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2013.

He was born May 14, 1932 in Akron, Ohio to Joseph and Thelma Meckler. Joe graduated from South High School in 1950 and was a proud United States Marine Veteran, serving his country in the Korean War. He graduated from Akron University with both a Bachelor and Master Degree in Education. Joe taught physical education in the Akron elementary schools for 37 years and was awarded the prestigious Jennings Award in education. He retired in 1995 as a teacher Emeritus and refereed basketball in the Akron area for 50 years until the age of 80. He was proud to have donated over 19 gallons of blood. Joe was a member of Arlington Memorial Baptist church for 57 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, all sports and working in his yard.

Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jean LeBarre. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Trudy; daughters, Gayle (Michael) Strzelecki, Cheryl Breusch; sons Joe Jr. (Monica), Jeff (Cara); grandchildren, Kristen, Keith, Staci, Melissa, Joey, Nichole, Andrea, Daniel, Ashley and Lauren; great grandsons, Jackson and Blakelan; siblings, Rita Meckler, Ed Meckler, and Janet Sprague. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, Ohio 44312.

Memorial services will be held Friday, 12 Noon at Arlington Memorial Baptist Church, 2330 E. Market Street, Akron, Ohio 44312 with Pastor Dave Bogue officiating. Inurnment 9:30 a.m. Friday at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the church.
