John Harrison Engell, age 92, of Pickerington, Ohio (long time resident of Akron, Ohio), beloved husband and best friend of Marilou (Rife) Engell for 57 years, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2013.

Besides his wife, Marilou, John is survived by his sons, John (Jan) of Oklahoma and Mark (Valerie) of Ohio; his granddaughters, Rachel and Brittany; step-grandsons, Brad, David and Robbie; his brother, Norman Engell and sister, Grace Bowers, both of Pennsylvania; his half-sister, Janet Buff of Arizona; as well as his numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

John spent his life as a devout Christian. As an active member of New Horizons Christian Church for close to 50 years, he served the church and God in many positions. John joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a teenager and proudly served our country in Europe in the U.S. Army’s 11th Calvary Unit during World War II. One of John’s favorite past times was watching baseball. The Cleveland Indians was his favorite team and being one of their biggest fans, he rarely missed watching a game. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of the Mt. Carmel Hospice and Palliative Care Unit. Their dedication and effort to provide quality care over the last month was a heartwarming blessing to our entire family. We thank God for the gifts of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him.

The family will receive friends on Friday, from 12 to 1 p.m., at New Horizons Christian Church, 290 Darrow Road, Akron, Ohio 44305, where funeral service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. James Bane officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Park, where military honors will be conducted. Memorial donations may be made in John’s name to your local hospice, or Mt. Carmel Hospice, 1144 Dublin Road, Columbus, OH 43215.
