Gilbert C. “Gil” Weiland, age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 1, 2016.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he lived in Akron all of his life and graduated from Hower Vocational High School. Gil served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and retired from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Goodyear Yacht Club and the Amateur Radio Club. Gil enjoyed sailing, canoeing, camping and traveling south, and especially enjoyed talking with his amateur radio buddies every afternoon at 12:30.
Preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Suzy; wife, Bernie; parents, Alfred and Lena Weiland; and sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Ray McCort, he is survived by sons, Terry Weiland (Barbara) and Alan Weiland (Debbie); daughter, Judy Giacomo (Joe); eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Gil’s family would like to extend a thank you to Kathy and Sandy for taking such good care of Bernie and Gil.
Private graveside service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery on Dad’s 94th birthday, Wednesday, January 6, 2016. The family suggests memorials to Firestone VFW Post 3383, 690 W. Waterloo Road, Akron, OH 44314.
