Felix Alonzo Basug

November 19, 1913 — January 17, 2017

Felix Alonzo Basug, 103, of Uniontown, OH, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on January 17, 2017. He was born in the Philippines on November 19, 1913 to Agustin and Ana Basug. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Carmen (Dannug), daughter Carmencita (Mark) Slabinski, and three granddaughters, Victoria, Elizabeth, and Christina Slabinski, all from Uniontown, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Agustin and Ana, his brothers Ceferino and Maximino Basug, and his sisters Francisca, Rufina, and Rosario Basug. Felix graduated early from Ilocos Norte Normal School (an accelerated high school taught by Americans). After graduating from secondary schooling at the Ilocos Norte Institute, he taught grades 2 and 3 at the Veruela Settlement Farm School in Mindanao. After several years, Felix decided to further his education. He graduated from the Mapua Institute of Technology with an electrical engineering degree, the Far Eastern University with a mechanical engineering degree and the University of the Philippines with an industrial management degree. He taught engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of the Philippines prior to residing in the United States. Felix worked at Erikson tool, which then became Kennametal, where he developed innovative solutions to make the process and production of their products more efficient until his retirement in 1983. Felix was a devout Catholic and was a Charter member of the Church of the Resurrection in Solon, OH. He served as a Eucharistic minister and greeter. He also loved to volunteer at Metro Health Skilled Nursing Facility. Along with his wife, they established the Basug Medical Career Scholarship as a way to give back to the community. There have been 45 recipients to date. He believed education was something no one could take away from you and one thing you could do to improve your position in life. He believed one should always keep learning, no matter their age. Felix cherished his Filipino heritage and was a lifetime member of PASO (Philippine American Society of Ohio). He also wanted to help those in his homeland and contributed annually to the APPO (Association of Philippine Physicians in Ohio) medical mission trips for the Philippines. Felix’s special interests included “tinkering with his tools,” traveling around the world, gardening and giving the fruits of his labors to family and friends, playing his alto saxophone in a band, and spending time with family and friends. He especially loved playing chess with his granddaughters while imparting his words of wisdom and love of God. His laughter and joy will be greatly missed by his family. • Memorial donations may be made out to Carmen Basug for (place in memo line) the Basug Medical Career Scholarship, PO Box 673, Uniontown, OH 44685. • Calling hours are on Friday, January 20th from 4PM to 8PM at Hopkins-Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, Uniontown, OH. • Funeral mass will be at 10:30AM on Saturday, January 21st at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2952 Edison Street NW, Uniontown, OH. • Place of interment will be Sunset Hills Memory Gardens, 7920 Frank Avenue NW, North Canton, OH.
