Eugene J. “Gene” Sofran Sr., age 87, joined his family in Heaven on December 16, 2015.
Born in Akron, he lived most of his life in Uniontown. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Gene graduated from the University of Akron and retired from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company after 36 years of service. He was a member of Nativity of the Lord Jesus Catholic Church, and the Goodyear Yacht Club and golf leagues. In his spare time, Gene enjoyed golfing, fishing and boating and especially loved gardening.
Preceded in death by his wife, Marie “Nan”; and parents, Jeff and Emma Sofran, he is survived by son, Gene (Peggy); daughters, Barbara (Roger) Marcinkoski, Lisa (Phil) Huffman, Nanette (Don) Selby and Kathy (Bill) Carper; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and cousin, Cecilia (Don) Elmerick. The family would like to extend their thanks to Pebble Creek and Harbor Light Hospice for their loving care.
Friends and family will be received Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave.) Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 9 a.m. at Nativity of the Lord Jesus Catholic Church, 2425 Myersville Road, Akron, Ohio 44312 with Father David Halaiko presiding. Procession will form at the church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted. The family suggests memorials to Nativity Church, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 70 W. Streetsboro St., Suite 201, Hudson, OH 44236.
