Eugene R. Hunsucker passed away on October 26, 2015.
Born on October 18, 1926, Gene was raised in Spartanburg, SC until 1941 when he moved with his family to Detroit, Mich. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to the Philippine Islands where he served as a member of the Military Police. After World War II, he moved to Los Angeles, Calif. where he completed training to be an Aviation Mechanic and worked at the Pickwick Drive-In theatre. He immediately rejoined the Army at the start of the Korean War, rising to the rank of SFC and spending many months exposed to enemy fire as a combat engineer.
After completing military service, he attended Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana. He graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and was selected for Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges. Gene spent the next 30 years working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron, Ohio. He patented an adhesive for use in the building of tires, and circled the globe several times as a Principal Compounder for Goodyear International. His favorite locations included South America and India.
A resident of Mogadore for over 50 years, Gene served several years as chairman of the Mogadore Parks Board. Gene was also a member of the Mogadore United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee for many years. A friend to all animals, he fed a small army of squirrels as well as any neighborhood dog that stopped by his yard.
Gene is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Ruth G. “Gerry” Hunsucker; daughter, Jane Smith (Larry); son, Keith Hunsucker (Linda); and grandsons, Evan and Adam Smith. The family would especially like to thank neighbors Tom and Esther Shuman and the staff at The Gables of KentRidge for their help and support.
Funeral services will be Friday, 11 a.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 34 S. Cleveland Avenue (Route 532), MOGADORE, Ohio 44260 with Rev. Pamela Gable officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Family and friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday, from 5 to 7 p.m.; and Friday from 10 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mogadore United Methodist Church, 3828 Mogadore Road, Mogadore, OH 44260.
