Ernest A. "Ernie" Cornell

Ernest A. “Ernie” Cornell, age 90, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2018. Born in Akron, he grew up in Atwater and had been an area resident most of his life. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Ernie retired in 1988 from AC&Y Railroad where he worked as a brakeman as well as a conductor. He was a member of Atwater Church of the Nazarene. Ernie loved carpentry work and fixing things. He was a wonderful husband and father, who worked hard to provide for his family whom he loved very much, especially his grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Roy Cornell and Mary (Wilson) Shook; twin sons, Terry and Larry; brother, Bill; and sister, Ruth Evans, Ernie is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 72 years, Betty (nee Carroll); daughters, Joan (Robert) Charles and Sheila Gentile; grandchildren, Jimmy Gentile, Dena (Luke) Grable, Erica and Robby Charles; other relatives and friends. Ernie’s family would like to thank the staff at Mulberry Gardens Memory Care for their care and kindness, especially his favorite aide, Amberlee. Funeral Service will be Saturday, 12 noon at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron (Ellet), Ohio 44312 with Rev. Robert Charles officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Atwater Cemetery. Friends and family will be received prior to the service on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
