Elizabeth Virginia Jones (nee Patton)

September 8, 1920 — October 4, 2014

Elizabeth Virginia Jones, born September 8, 1920 in Akron, Ohio, passed away on October 4, 2014 surrounded by the love of family.

Elizabeth, known by her friends as Pat, graduated in 1942 from Kent State University and taught for two years in a one-room schoolhouse in Polk, Ohio. She then obtained a job with the Akron Public School System in 1944 and taught third and fourth grade at Ritzman School, retiring in 1985. For many years before her retirement, she taught in the “Portables”, a make-shift classroom behind the school. The teachers who taught in the portable became known as the “Dirty Feet”; a name they later took for their monthly card playing group.

Elizabeth is a long time alumni of Kent State University, the Dirty Feet card members group; Eastern Star Cuyahoga Falls Chapter; the Akron and Summit County Federation of Women’s Clubs; the Red Hat Society and the Social Order of Beauceant. She was a lifetime member of the United Church of Christ, East Market Street in Akron. Elizabeth loved to travel, especially remembering her trip to England in 1986 as well as her many vacations with her sister and nephew.

The family thanks her long time neighbors on Sumatra Avenue who cared so much for her after her husband’s death as well as the staff at Coal Ridge Assisted Living Facility and Hospice of Medina. Your support and compassion is truly appreciated. In 1950, Elizabeth married Cecil C. Jones, now deceased. Preceded in death by her parents; and her Aunt Lois Hoff; Elizabeth is survived by her only sister, Florence Berlin of Midland, Michigan; niece, Carol Weirman (Jack); and nephews, Chris and Thomas, of Midland, Michigan and Rick (Kelly) of Florida. She also leaves to celebrate her life her cousins, William Patton, Jr. (Phyllis), of Lewisburg, WV, Margaret Kellison Renick (Donald) of West Virginia, Dr. David Hoff (Linda) of Tallmadge, Ohio and Rev. John Hoff (Charlee) of Allentown, PA. Special in her life were her cousins, Robert and Beth Hoff, who cared for her for many years. She is also survived by many grand-nieces and nephews.
