Edmond R. Vercamen, age 92 of Akron, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016.
Ed was born on October 27, 1923 in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Edmond Vercammen, Sr. and Mae Frances (Allridge) Vercammen. Ed was a paratrooper in World War II serving in Europe as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was also a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He married Della Ruth (Cramer) Vercamen in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1983. In 1992, he married Joyce (Javorsky) Vercamen.
Ed had been a resident of the Akron area for most of his life, moving here in 1946 from Uniontown, Pennsylvania. He retired in 1985 after 40 years with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron. He also worked for Floreani Concrete Construction and for Connor Asphalt. He was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Besides his work, Ed enjoyed home improvement projects, building his own home in the late 1970s. He helped many people in countless projects as well and loved bowling, pitching horseshoes, working on cars, and travelling. He especially loved playing cards while enjoying retirement in Lake Placid, Florida. Ed also enjoyed the friends he made over the years, but his biggest joy was his family, including cousins, nieces and nephews. He always seemed to be the life of every family wedding, graduation, beach vacation and celebration. The closeness of the family today can be attributed to Ed’s example.
Besides his parents and Della, Ed was preceded in death by his sisters, Elizabeth (Vercamen) McCullough (1959), Matilda (Vercamen) Ward (2006) and Grace (Vercamen) Wood (1989). Ed will be greatly missed by his wife, Joyce Vercamen; his three daughters, Carol (Robert) Young of Akron, Brenda (James) Devine of Marion and Cindy (Charles) Collier of North Canton; niece, Della (Frank) Stull of Broomes Island, Md.; two step-children, Jim (Amy) Javorsky of Erie, Pa. and Debbie (Jack) Dalton of Massillon; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Vercamen of Clermont, Fla. and Joe (Rose) Vercamen of Cuyahoga Falls; and many other relatives and friends.
