Dwight C. “Deke” Ickes, age 80, passed away on June 9, 2017.
Raised in Mineral City, Ohio, he lived Akron before moving to Uniontown for the past 43 years. Deke graduated from Mineral City High School and served in the U.S. Army in Greenland. He retired from the Sun Oil Company after 35 years of service, and was a member of the Uniontown Lions Club and Uniontown Community Park Board. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Uniontown for 39 years and sang in church choirs for 50 years. Deke coached youth baseball and played softball in Akron for Trinity United Church of Christ. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed being part of all of their activities.
Deke is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Carol; children, Mary Jane (Ed) Heckathorn, Dwight (Karen) Ickes and Eric (Alexis) Ickes; grandchildren, Kylie, Bryan (Carrianne), KateLyn, Emily, Kenneth and Savannah; brothers, Carl (Jean) and Bruce (Clara); and sister, Patricia (Larry) Wright.
Friends and family will be received Tuesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave.) Funeral service will be Wednesday, 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Nelson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Uniontown Greenlawn Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Grace United Church of Christ, 13275 Cleveland Avenue, Uniontown, OH 44685.
