Douglas Fela

Douglas Fela, age 46, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2015, surrounded by his family and friends, after a five year battle with cancer.

Born in Cuyahoga Falls, he lived in the Akron area all of his life. Douglas graduated from Ellet High School in 1987. He was a skilled carpenter and belonged to the Carpenters Union Local 639. Douglas had been an Akron Firefighter since 1992, retiring in 2013 after 21 years of service. He attended Oak Hill Presbyterian Church and enjoyed camping, boating and fishing. Douglas coached youth sports for many years and was an avid Buckeyes Fan. His greatest love was spending time with his wife, children and other family.

Preceded in death by his father, Norman; Douglas is survived by his wife of nearly 22 years, Michelle; sons, Justin and Joshua; mother, Patricia Fela; brothers, Scott (Maria) and Todd (Erin); in-laws, Barbara Exline and David (Val) Baughman; many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron, Ohio 44312, where a Last Alarm Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. by AARFWA. A memorial service will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Oak Hill Presbyterian Church, 2406 Ardwell Ave., Akron, Ohio 44312, with Pastor Brian Nutt officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial fund has been set up for Doug’s sons in care of Michelle Fela at any Fifth Third Bank. Donations may also be made to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, c/o Akron General Foundation, 400 Wabash Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44307-2463.
