Donald B. Hines, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on February 28, 2013 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born in Akron, Ohio on March 22, 1919, Don grew up in Webster County, W. Va. He served in the United States Navy Seabees for 3-1/2 years in the Pacific during World War II. It was there he learned carpentry skills that led to his beloved career building homes in the Akron area as the owner/operator of Hines Construction. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Edna (Cogar) Hines enjoyed many years of RV traveling and wintering in Florida and Texas. He was a member of the Clearview United Methodist Church.

Don is survived by Edna, his wife of nearly 72 years; sons, Leo Hines, Kerry (Brenda) Hines; daughter, Donna (Marshall) Holmes; grandchildren, Diana Bergdorf, Sherry Bitecofer, Paula Calhoun, and David Holmes; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Carter and Jessie Schlarb; brother, Robert Hines; and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by parents, Clifford and Goldie Hines; brother, Walt Hines; and sister, Geri Oliver.

Don lived most of his life in Springfield Twp. but relocated to The Waterford senior’s apartment complex in North Canton in 2010. His final three months were spent at St. Luke’s Nursing Home. The family extends special thanks to the staff of St. Luke’s and Community Hospice of Tuscarawas, Stark and Carroll Counties for their compassionate care.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, March 6 at 12 noon at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Avenue), with Rev. Anne L. Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Uniontown Greenlawn Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by Mogadore VFW Post 8487. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. or one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Clearview United Methodist Church, 1733 Massillon Road, Akron, Ohio 44312, Communtiy Hospice, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663, or The Waterford Resident Fund, 201 Holl Road NE, North Canton, Ohio 44720.
