Charles died peacefully on November 5, 2014 with his loving family at his bedside after a massive stroke. He passed at Summa’s Palliative Care Unit.
Born in Akron on March 15, 1936, Charles worked at Summit Steel and retired from Burger Iron/Bico after 23 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. Charles was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by all!
Preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Clarence Philips and five sisters; he is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth; children, Gary (Mary) Higgins, Nonna Philips, Cheryl Hopkins, Lillie Jenkins, Christina Wright, Randy Philips and Cindy (Marc) Currey; sisters, Carol Ann Zarobell, Erma O’Brien and Virgie Lintner; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, from 10 to 11 a.m., at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road (Route 91), Akron, Ohio 44312, where funeral service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Lisa Philips-Simon officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Park. The family suggests memorials to Summa Foundation, P.O. Box 2090, Akron, OH 44398-6153.
