After 90 years, Carolyn Hammitt left her home in Mogadore, Ohio on December 9, 2016 for her eternal home in Heaven. Carolyn was born in 1926 to Reta and Dale Kreiner of Mogadore; graduated from Mogadore High School in 1944 as valedictorian and homecoming queen; and attended the Actual Business School and The University of Akron. She worked for the Bonner Insurance Agency before joining the Akron Public School System where she spent most of her career working until her retirement in 1981.
Carolyn was a lifelong member of the Mogadore Christian Church. Throughout her lifetime as a faithful servant of Christ, Carolyn assumed various leadership roles including Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) President, youth group leader, pianist and 60+ year member of the church choir. She loved music and singing, and also enjoyed many years performing with the Mogadore Village Belle Chapter of Sweet Adeline’s International and with her father and siblings in the Kreiner Family Quartet.
Carolyn was dedicated to her community, actively participating in the Mogadore Garden Club, Mogadore Historical Society, Mogadore Art Show and many Mogadore and Kent golf leagues. Through her service activities, Carolyn not only gave back to the community, but also made many longtime friends. As a lifetime resident of Mogadore, above all, Carolyn was an avid and proud supporter of the Mogadore Wildcat High School football teams and her grandson, Coach Cat. Carolyn, together with her husband, also regularly attended Kent State University sporting events and opened their home to Kent State athletes.
Carolyn’s husband, Wayne Hammitt, is her lifelong love. They celebrated 68 years of marriage this past year, surrounded by family and friends. Carolyn and Wayne’s cherished and devoted daughter, Cheryl (Hammitt) Murphy of Mogadore was by her side when Carolyn went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Reta Kreiner; sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Bob King; brother-in-law, Joe Morgan; sister-in-law, Betty Kreiner; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Delores and Willis Hartley. She is survived by her loving husband, Wayne Hammitt; her daughter, Cheryl Murphy; grandchildren, Sandi Murphy, Cat (Paula) Murphy and Peggi (Greg) Sibley; great grandchildren, Rachel and Josh Sibley, McKenna Murphy, Raina Rotondo and Donavan Allen; brothers, Don and Steve (Debby) Kreiner; special friends/family, Joanne Thompson, Larry Murphy, Rob Rotondo and Marty Stillinger; many nieces, nephews, extended family and loyal friends.
Carolyn truly enjoyed her friends and family, and her home and heart were always open to them. Her passions included golf, traveling and music; she often organized many golf and other vacations, parties and picnics to spread joy to others. Carolyn especially loved spending time at the beach in South Carolina with God, family and friends. Carolyn’s faith in Christ was evident to all those who were blessed to know her, and she shared God’s love and filled the hearts of many with love, faith, inspiration and hope.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Mogadore Fire Department and the Akron Summa Hospice outpatient doctors and caregivers, as well as many thanks to all of Carolyn’s special friends and family who never failed to comfort and support her.
