Betty N. Spellman, age 92, was welcomed into the loving arms of the Lord, and was reunited with her beloved husband, Andy on September 2, 2013.
Born in Kenton, Tenn., she lived in the Akron area since the early 1930’s, and had lived in Uniontown since 1965. Betty retired as Vice President from Presco after 26 years of service, and was a founding member of St. Matthew, Queen of Heaven and Nativity of the Lord Jesus parishes. She was a Girl Scout leader for eight years at St. Paul parish, taught pre-school at both Nativity and Queen of Heaven parishes, helped with funeral dinners at Nativity, and was a member of “We Care”. Betty was active in establishing the Uniontown Community Park with her husband, Andy. They enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the United States and Canada, visiting each of the contiguous states at least once. Above all, she was a loving mother and devoted wife.
Preceded in death by her husband of 67-1/2 years, Andy; parents, Cornelius and Pearl Ruddle; sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice and Nelson Sims and Vergie and Glen Farris. She is survived by children, Patricia (Edward) Carson, Sister Marguerite Marie [Elizabeth] Spellman, and Thomas (Jean) Spellman; grandchildren, Dennis (Rhonda), Michael (Sonja), Timothy and Steve Carson, Eileen (Jason) Hostetler, Carol (Jed) Sawmiller, Andrew Spellman, and Sandra (Doug) Klein; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, with two more expected. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff of Altercare of Hartville for their loving kindness and generous care of Betty.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, September 11, 11 a.m. at Nativity of the Lord Jesus Catholic Church, 2425 Myersville Road (at Killian Road), Akron, Ohio 44312, with Father David Halaiko presiding. Following the funeral dinner, burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 10 at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave.), UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685. Memorials are suggested to the St. Vincent de Paul Society c/o Nativity of the Lord Jesus Catholic Church.
