Bertha (Sam) Thornton

June 12, 1949 — June 12, 2015

Bertha (Sam) Thornton, age 66, passed away on June 12, 2015 after an extended illness. 

Born in Akron, she lived in the Akron area all of her life, and was a graduate of Garfield High School. Sam was employed with Myers Industries (Akro-Mils) for over ten years, and also worked at Goodwill of Lakemore. She was a member of Portage Lakes Eagles and enjoyed cooking, line dancing, sewing, and NASCAR. 

Preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Louise Shook; and aunt, Ann of New Jersey; she is survived by her husband Terry; son, Richard; daughter, Debbie; grandchildren, Dannyelle, Ryan and Aaron Rohr; brothers, Ted Norman and Gordon Shook Jr.(Butchie); and dear friend, Marla Riley of South Carolina. 

Celebration of Life service will be Wednesday, 6 p.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave.), UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685. Family and friends will be received from 4 p.m. until service time Wednesday. The family suggests memorials to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.
