Bernadette "Bernie" Smith

"Together Again" Bernadette “Bernie” Smith, age 91, passed away on October 9, 2018. Born on September 1, 1927 to Harry and Stella Miller of Suffield, Ohio, she was a graduate of Suffield High School and remained in the area all of her life. Bernie was a beloved mother, grandmother, community volunteer and friend who loved to entertain. She especially enjoyed celebrating holidays with family and fostering traditions. Bernie was a life member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the Kent State Friends of Fashion Society, the Chestnut Society, the Akron Women’s City Club, and the Congress Lake Garden Club. She was part of a group of ladies committed to swimming daily for over 40 years at the Tallmadge Y and the Natatorium. Preceded in death by her husband, J C Smith; sons, David and Michael; great-grandson, Easton; and brothers, Wilbur and Michael, Bernie is survived by sons, Steve, Tom (Lanna), Pat (Sharon) and John (Julie); daughters-in-law, Sandy and Debbie; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and sister, Alma Wartko. A special thank you to the Canton Visiting Angels for their loving care of Bernie. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2643 Waterloo Road, Mogadore, Ohio 44260 with Father Thomas Acker, S.J. presiding. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service Tuesday, from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Suffield/Randolph Food Shelf.
