Archie Brown of Uniontown finished his marathon on December 22, 2016 surrounded by family and in the care of the compassionate CVICU staff at Akron General Medical Center.
Archie accomplished much in his 84 years and lived life to its fullest. Archie served in the Air Force, married the love of his life, provided a great life for his family that stretched beyond traditional boundaries, retired from Goodyear, and had more fun than most of us could dream.
Archie was an accomplished athlete, volunteer coach, and umpire. He is a member of the Portage County Sports Hall of Fame. Archie played organized football, softball, and basketball well into his senior years. He was a decorated marathon runner, including Boston. Archie won the Revco Cleveland Marathon for his age group.
Archie skied tall mountains and dove deep oceans.
Archie leaves behind many who miss him dearly, including his loving wife of over 63 years, Jean; daughter, Kathy Zehner (David); sons, Don (Paula) and Tony (Diane); daughter-in-law, Pam; grandchildren (Alex, Ariel, Alex, Aaron, Melissa, J, Andy, David, Jacob, J.R., Katie, Adam, Cody and Emma); great-grandchildren (Zoe, Ian and Peyton); brothers-in-law, Jim May and Mike Steidl; and numerous nieces and nephews. Archie was preceded in death by his son (Dennis), father (Oral), mother (Grace Barton), his Granny Brown, brother (Don), and guardian son, James (Shorty) Moore (survived by Cherie and Jay).
Archie never met a stranger and was a friend to all.
Archie’s life was challenging the past decade due to a stroke. He persevered and received boundless love and care from his wife. Jean selflessly and happily made these past few years meaningful. She maintained the quality of Archie’s life until he reunited with Dennis, Shorty, and others who went before him.
Friends and family will be received Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW, UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 & Cleveland Ave.) Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, 10 a.m. at Nativity of the Lord Jesus Catholic Church, 2425 Myersville Road (at Killian Road), Akron, Ohio 44312 with Father David Halaiko presiding. Archie believed in showing kindness and interest to all he encountered. In lieu of flowers, he would encourage you to incorporate that spirit in your lives and help others through worthwhile charities such as Hattie Larlham: (http://www.hattielarlham.org).
