Our dear mom, Alma Joan Weakland, passed away on October 12, 2022 at the age of 90.
Alma was the middle of three children born to her parents, the late Albert and Dorena Thissen, in Akron Ohio. She graduated from Central High School in 1950, from which she found lifelong and priceless friendships.
Mom was a well-loved member of her extended community. She loved her life and was a wonderful example of unconditional love -- offering a smile, meal or place to sleep anytime someone needed it. She loved her friends, neighbors, church, pastor, parents, brother (Don), sister (Karen), aunts, uncles, cousins, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She also loved her home in Goodyear Heights, where she lived for 60 years. She enjoyed movies, books and writing thoughtful notes and cards to everyone, and was an excellent writer. No one could out-maneuver mom at her annual yard sale and our home was stocked with “treasures.” She was creative and thoughtful, doing things like throwing carnivals for the neighbor kids and creating themes for get-togethers. She was a true romantic at heart, loyal, taught Sunday School and loved singing in her church choir. She rarely said a bad word about anyone, tended to look at the bright side of everything and always rooted for the underdog! She loved to cook, and we will miss her chili, fresh salads, breakfasts, vegetable soup, cheese, fresh tomatoes, spaghetti, coffee percolator and “chip chop” ham. More than anything, she was a wonderful mother who was always there for us when we needed her and to always give us her best.
Alma was a loving and devoted wife of over 56 years to her husband, Robert L. Weakland, who predeceased her by four years. She is survived by her children Dave (Amie) Duncan, Donna (Skip) Holler, Bonny Marcum, Glenn (Roberta) Weakland, Chris Weakland, Gary Weakland, Danny Weakland and Linda (Rob) Vanek; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Mom had little, yet had everything – and lived the richest of lives.
